How to Maintain Your Wig and Make It Last Longer (Complete Guide)

Introduction

Wigs have become a major part of everyday beauty, especially here in the UK where many women want convenience, protection, and style all in one. But one thing I always notice is this, a lot of people invest in good wigs but don’t maintain them properly.

As a professional hairstylist, I’ve seen expensive wigs get damaged within weeks simply because of poor care. The truth is, if you maintain your wig correctly, it can last for months or even years.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through simple, practical steps to help you keep your wig looking fresh, natural, and long lasting.

1. Choose the Right Wig for Your Lifestyle

6

Before maintenance even starts, choosing the right wig matters a lot.

There are two main types:

  • Human hair wigs
  • Synthetic wigs

Human hair wigs last longer and can be styled with heat, while synthetic wigs are more affordable but require more careful handling.

👉 From my experience, if you wear wigs regularly, investing in a good human hair wig is always worth it.

2. Wash Your Wig Properly

6

One of the biggest mistakes people make is either washing their wig too often or not washing it at all.

How often should you wash it?

  • Human hair wigs: every 2 to 3 weeks
  • Synthetic wigs: every 10 to 15 wears

How to wash:

  1. Detangle gently before washing
  2. Use lukewarm water
  3. Apply a mild shampoo
  4. Rinse gently (do not rub aggressively)
  5. Apply conditioner (mainly on the length)

👉 Avoid twisting or squeezing the wig harshly. Always be gentle.

3. Dry Your Wig the Right Way

6

After washing, how you dry your wig is just as important.

The best method is air drying.

  • Place your wig on a wig stand
  • Let it dry naturally
  • Avoid excessive heat

👉 As a hairstylist, I always tell my clients, too much heat is one of the fastest ways to damage a wig.

4. Store Your Wig Properly

6

Never just throw your wig anywhere after use.

Proper storage helps:

  • Maintain shape
  • Prevent tangling
  • Keep it clean

Best ways to store:

  • Use a wig stand
  • Keep it in a silk or satin bag
  • Store in a clean, dry place

5. Avoid Too Much Heat Styling

6

Heat can damage wigs quickly, especially if used too often.

If you must use heat:

  • Use heat protectant
  • Keep temperature low
  • Avoid daily styling

👉 For synthetic wigs, avoid heat completely unless it’s heat resistant.

6. Keep the Wig Moisturised

6

Dry wigs look dull and tangle easily.

Use:

  • Light oils
  • Leave in conditioner
  • Wig sprays

👉 Don’t over apply products, keep it light to avoid buildup.

7. Take Care of the Lace

7

The lace is one of the most delicate parts of your wig.

To protect it:

  • Remove glue gently
  • Avoid pulling
  • Clean regularly

👉 Damaged lace is one of the main reasons wigs stop looking natural.

8. Avoid Sleeping With Your Wig On

5

Sleeping with your wig can cause:

  • Tangling
  • Frizz
  • Lace damage

👉 Always remove your wig before bed, or at least wrap it properly with a satin scarf if necessary.

9. Detangle Gently

7

Always detangle from:
👉 Ends → then move up to the roots

Use:

  • Wide tooth comb
  • Wig brush

👉 Never rush this process, that’s how shedding starts.

Final Thoughts

Taking care of your wig is not difficult, but it requires consistency.

As a professional hairstylist, my advice is simple, treat your wig like your natural hair. The better you care for it, the longer it will last and the better it will look.

A well maintained wig doesn’t just save you money, it keeps you looking polished and confident at all times.
